FCC Announces Application Dates for Cybersecurity Program

September 4, 2024

Today, the Federal Communications Commission released a public notice announcing the Cybersecurity Pilot Program application filing window for K-12 Schools and Libraries.

The application window will open on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, and close on Friday, November 1, 2024. Prospective applicants will have six weeks to complete part one of the application process and submit for approval.

FCC Adds Off-Premises Wi-Fi Hotspots and Internet Service to E-Rate Program

July 22, 2024

The FCC has officially voted to add off-premises use of Wi-Fi hotspots and wireless Internet services to the E-Rate eligible services list.

Beginning with the 2025-26 funding year, schools and libraries can receive E-Rate funding to loan Wi-Fi hotspots. This will enable them to provide mobile, wireless services to students, school staff, and library patrons for use outside the physical premises of the school or library. It's a move aimed at enhancing connectivity and ensuring access to educational resources beyond the traditional classroom or library setting.

Other details:

There will be a three-year budget to ensure equitable distribution of Wi-Fi hotspots and services.
Wi-Fi hotspots and services must be used for educational purposes and be in compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act.

FCC approves advanced cybersecurity pilot program

The FCC has formally voted to approve the Schools and Libraries Cybersecurity Pilot Program.

According to John Windhausen, executive director of SHLB, “This initiative, aimed at bolstering cybersecurity measures for K-12 schools and libraries, represents a significant step forward in safeguarding student information and protecting school and library networks from cyber-attacks.”
